Cruise ship bookings continued to improve as travelers are scheduling their trips on shorter notice, according to cruise ship operator Royal Caribbean.

Onboard ticket passenger revenue was up by 11pc to $3.2bn in the second quarter of 2025 compared with $2.8bn in the same quarter in 2024. So far this year, total ticket passenger revenue is at $5.94bn, a 9pc increase from $5.42bn in the first half of last year.

Increased spending at higher prices onboard vessels has boosted revenues, the company said.

Royal Caribbean said its bookings in the second quarter were up, but it did not give specific figures. According to a customer survey, more than 50pc of travelers have been scheduling their cruise trips closer to the departure date than in the past, Royal Caribbean said.

"For the people who intend to travel in the next 12 months, the majority have not yet booked," said Jason Liberty, the company's chief executive.

Royal Caribbean spent $279mn on marine fuel in the latest quarter compared with $282mn for the same period in 2024. Marine fuel spending has totaled $557mn so far in 2025, 5pc lower than the first half of 2024 at $586mn. The company is projecting to spend $298mn on fuel in the upcoming quarter.

Fuel consumption ticked up by 3pc to 422,000 metric tonnes (t) in the latest quarter compared with 410,000t in the same quarter in 2024. It is expecting to consume 433,000t of fuel in the third quarter of this year.

Royal Caribbean reported a $1.2bn profit in the second quarter of 2025, up by 41pc from $854mn in the same quarter last year.
