Global steelmaker ArcelorMittal began to restart its Lazaro Cardenas blast furnace in the Mexican state of Michoacan after it was idled in July 2025.
The 2.5mn metric tonne (t)/yr furnace — used in the 6.5mn t/yr complex's long steel production — was idled after a series of power cuts damaged the furnace's boilers. The reactivation process began on 15 January after the conclusion of technical and operational preparations, the company said.
The July idling came nine months after a prior stoppage caused by a labor dispute with the Sindicato Minero union.
