Singapore, 7 May (Argus) — Taiwan's Taoyuan international airport posted strong double-digit growth in its March operations from a year earlier for both its passenger and cargo operations.

Taoyuan's total passenger traffic rose 21pc to 2.11mn passengers in March, up from 1.74mn the previous year. The number of departures from the airport grew 23.5pc to 958,069, while arrivals climbed 19.8pc to 951,845.

Freight traffic also improved in March, with total freight tonnage surging 65.4pc from a year earlier to 156,848t. Imports and exports registered a 63.38pc and 52.17pc respective increase to 42,994t and 54,766t.

The number of aircraft arriving and departing from Taoyuan in March also increased to 12,955 from 11,226 during the same period in 2009.

Taoyuan has continued to benefit from warming diplomatic ties between Beijing and Taipei that has improved transport links between Taiwan and China, with an increased frequency of flights supporting jet fuel demand. Taiwan and China began direct flights for the first time in July 2008, easing a ban on such links in place since the end of China's civil war in 1949. Flights between the two previously had to fly via Hong Kong.
