Total and Samsung inaugurated a new condensate splitter and an aromatics unit at their Daesan, South Korea petrochemical complex this week.
The upgrades are part of a larger $1.8bn project, first announced in 2012, to effectively double production capacity at the complex, which sends roughly half of its production to Total's 200,000 t/yr polystyrene plant in Foshan.
The condensate splitter will produce both heavy naphtha for the aromatics complex in addition to light naphtha for use in its steam cracker, according to a statement released today.
The two partners signed a joint venture agreement in early 2012. The 15-unit complex currently produces polypropylene and polyethylene made via steam cracking from monomers, styrene, paraxylene and other petroleum products such as jet fuel, gasoline, and soon diesel.
