Alex produces Argus’ thermal and metallurgical coal price and supply/demand projections as part of the Seaborne Coal Outlook service. He has spent 13 years covering commodities, including natural gas, LNG and agricultural markets, at various price reporting agencies.

David Luff
Senior Manager, Analytics & Consulting (Gas/LNG), Argus Media

David is responsible for producing gas and LNG supply, demand and pricing projections as part of the European Natural Gas Outlook service. He has over 15 years’ experience analysing gas and power markets, including roles involving gas storaage optimisation and short-term gas and power trading.

Gas and coal prices have surged following LNG supply disruptions in the Middle East, reshaping fuel-switching patterns for the northern hemisphere’s 2026–27 heating season. Markets with flexible coal/gas switching capacity, such as Japan, South Korea and the EU, have largely shifted back to coal, while Taiwan remains an outlier. Coal use is also rising across South and Southeast Asia, where it underpins most power systems. But with hydro output weak under El Niño and coal supply constrained by policy, geopolitics and weather, any further rise in gas and coal prices risks destroying demand among price-sensitive South Asian buyers.

Watch this video for a clear view of the dynamics shaping generation fuels and pricing outlook over the next 24 months — critical context for trading, procurement and strategy teams in thermal coal, gas, LNG and power markets.
