Corrects Vortexa import data in paragraph 2

Japan's gasoline imports rose to about a nine-year high in June and were estimated to have increased further in July as the country's refiners kept run rates low.

Gasoline imports rose to 364,917 kilolitres (77,000 b/d) in June, according to the Petroleum Association of Japan (PAJ). Imports are also expected to remain high at 67,700 b/d in July and at least 50,000 b/d in August, oil analytics firm Vortexa data show.

Rare gasoline exports also emerged from Singapore to Japan, according to GTT customs data. Singapore exported 70,238t (594,000 bl) and 71,765t of during June and July respectively. The city-state last exported 30,851t in October last year. Shipping fixtures show trading firm Trafigura chartered the tanker Olaf to load 35,000t on 22 June from Singapore to Kawasaki, Japan.

Japan's record imports came despite low consumption with production falling by a larger proportion with the lower refinery run rates. Consumption fell to a record low as the Japanese government placed restrictions on businesses and people's movements to combat Covid-19. Japan on 8 April declared a state of emergency to combat the coronavirus, which lasted until late May.

Gasoline consumption outstripped production by 113,000 b/d in June, the widest level since 2006 as refinery runs remain low. Runs were at an average of 59pc during June and July compared with an average of 87pc in 2019, according to the PAJ.

Consumption fell to a record low of 610,000 b/d in May before rising to 757,000 b/d in June. Average monthly gasoline consumption was 25.2mn bl or 828,000 b/d in 2019. But gasoline production fell to a record low of 558,000 b/d in May before moving higher to 643,000 b/d in June, although still more than 20pc lower than average monthly production in 2019.

But Japanese gasoline consumption could take a hit this month as some regions have declared another round of travel restrictions as Covid-19 infections continue to spread.
