Iran’s bitumen exports slow further on cyber breakdown

Bitumen exports from Iran have slowed further as a breakdown in internet facilities at key ports added to export difficulties this week.

A cyber facility breakdown on 15 October has hindered port operations and delayed the discharging and loading/unloading process of cargoes at key ports like Bandar Abbas and Abadan.

The internet outage struck Iranian customs and maritime organisations and much of such operations are now handled off line. The slower pace is resulting in vessels congestion at these ports, which is expected to delay the eventual delivery of shipments.

"We see a delay in customs operations and we must wait in a long queue as all activities are being done off line by the customs," said a bitumen exporter.

"We expect this cyber problem to take about a week to resolve," said another local exporter.

Discussions for bulk cargoes from Iran hovered at $150-160/t fob Bandar Abbas this week. There has been a shortage of bulk carriers from Iran to India given stricter surveillance of vessel movements under US-led sanctions.

Prices for drum cargoes were at $210-220/t fob Bandar Abbas in the past week. Freight for drum container vessels to western Indian ports have risen by $100-120/t this month. A shortage of container vessels arose from similar, strict surveillance by Indian port authorities on those vessels calling at Iranian ports.
