The collapse of an overburden dump at Indian pellet producer Godawari Power and Ispat's 2.35mn t/yr Ari Dongri mine has partially hit iron ore mining operations there.
There will be no impact on iron ore pellet production from the incident as there is sufficient iron ore inventories at the plant for a few weeks, the private-sector company said on 16 March.
"The company is taking necessary measures to prevent the damage and resume the mining operations at full capacity as soon as possible," Godawari said. "Mining operations at low volumes shall continue till further notice."
The exact impact on mining operations and consequent impact on profitability cannot be ascertained at this stage, the company added.
Godawari last month said it plans to raise its iron ore capacity at the Ari Dongri mine from the current 2.35mn t/yr to 6mn t/yr with a timeline of 18 months and increase its pellet capacity from 2.7mn t/yr currently to 5.7mn t/yr by building a 3mn t/yr facility at its Chhattisgarh plant with a timeline of 36 months.
The producer's iron ore pellet production during October-December 2022 rose by 1.7pc from a year earlier to 642,050t, while its iron ore production rose by 4pc on the year to 645,114t.
