Shell's European gas output fell in the third quarter from a year earlier, but the firm was still able to exceed its profit expectations.

The company's European gas production was 21.7mn m³/d in the third quarter, down from 22.7mn m³/d a year earlier, and from 22.4mn m³/d in the second quarter of 2025. The firm's European gas output fell 3.2pc on the year during the first nine months of 2025.

Shell has stakes in UK and Dutch fields, as well as a 17.8pc share in Norway's Ormen Lange field and an 8.1pc stake in the giant Troll field. Output from Troll averaged 111.4mn m³/d in July-August, the latest months for which data are available, down on the year from 119.2mn m³/d. But production at Ormen Lange stepped up to 23.8mn m³/d during those two months, from 20.6mn m³/d a year earlier, thanks to the completion of the Ormen Lange phase 3 project.

Separately, Shell started production at its Victory gas field in the UK North Sea at the end of September, which may support its fourth-quarter European output, with the firm expecting gross production to peak at 4.25mn m³/d.

And [Shell ishopeful](https://direct.argusmedia.com/newsandanalysis/article/2747622) that the "fiscal situation [in the UK] is improved" so that "we can make investments that allow for indigenous production" to meet UK demand long term, Shell's chief executive Wael Sawan said.

Sawan expects Adura — Shell's joint venture with Norway's Equinor — to "kick off before the end of the year".The two companies previously said that Adura will be the largest independent producer in the UK North Sea.

Shell's combined oil and gas production rose by 5pc from the second quarter to 2.82mn b/d of oil equivalent (boe/d), but was broadly flat year on year. The company said record output in Brazil and 20-year highs in the US Gulf of Mexico supported the increase. But the overall production increase was driven by higher oil output, with total gas production falling by 1.2pc in the third quarter from a year earlier, but rising on the quarter by 8.8pc.

The company reported a profit of $5.3bn for July–September, up by 24pc from a year earlier and ahead of the previous quarter's $3.6bn.
