Sao Paulo, 24 May (Argus) — Brazil's center-south sugarcane harvest has been moving ahead at full speed since mid-April, aided by dry weather, according to Datagro, an ethanol and sugar consultancy in the country.

But wet weather in March and early April did slow cane planting for the 2014-15 harvest in the center-south. On average, planting was 22pc behind last year's cane planting campaign by the end of April, Datagro said. But additional moisture early in the season will help sugar and ethanol output from the middle of the year forward by improving crop volume.

The rainy weather early this season has disrupted the planting of 18-month cane, prompted mills to plant greater quantities of 12-month cane. As a result, the first half of the 2014-15 crushing season, which starts in April 2014, will have a greater percentage of mature cane than this year's harvest, according to Datagro.

The record 584mn t center-south cane crop this season will also likely increase the amount of mature cane that is left in the field until next April. Mills are not expected to be able to crush all of the crop due to limited capacity and the growing number of days lost to rain.
