Unionised staff at Chevron Australia's LNG facilities in Western Australia (WA) will continue irregular strike action rather than a full stoppage of duties, as they press their claim for a new pay and conditions deal ahead of a crucial court hearing on 22 September.
The Offshore Alliance (OA) union had promised to escalate its strike at the 8.9mn t/yr Wheatstone LNG, 15.6mn t/yr Gorgon LNG and Wheatstone offshore gas platform in WA to full-day strikes from 14-29 September, but has since decided to scale down its impact.
"OA members in the many different work areas across the three separate facilities are meeting regularly to determine what action they will take as a team," an OA spokesman said on 14 September. "That strike action could take many forms from single one-hour stoppages to longer action and this action may differ team to team, or it could be collective action consistent across all 500 members."
The OA has also alleged Chevron has exerted "improper pressure and coercion" on its members by threatening pay deductions during periods of legally protected industrial action.
A spokesman for Chevron Australia said its focus is on maintaining safe and reliable operations in the event of disruption, and we will continue to manage the range of uncertainties that industrial action may present.
Chevron has applied to Australia's workplace arbiter the Fair Work Commission (FWC) for an intractable bargaining declaration to be issued regarding three enterprise agreements (EAs), for Wheatstone and Gorgon LNG as well as Wheatstone upstream workers. A hearing will be held in Sydney on 22 September. If the FWC grants the declaration it would gain power to make orders regarding the EAs.
