GM puts forth latest offer to UAW

US automaker General Motors (GM) has put forth another proposal to its union workforce, hours before the current contract expires and a possible strike.

The latest GM offer increases wages by 20pc, 2 percentage points higher than its previous offer, but is only half of what the United Auto Workers (UAW) union has demanded to replace the existing deals with GM, Ford and Stellantis, which expires at 11:59pm ET.

The pay increase would match what Ford has proposed and is above Stellantis' 17.5pc proposed hike.

In a letter to employees, GM chief executive Mary Barra addressed workers directly for the first time since the start of negotiations in July saying, "we're at a crossroads on our path to building a company that can sustain all of us for decades to come."

"We are working with urgency and have proposed yet another increasingly strong offer with the goal of reaching an agreement tonight. Remember, we had a strike in 2019 and nobody won."

The chief executive was referencing the six-week-long strike in September and October 2019, the longest for the auto industry in 50 years, the UAW said at the time.

That strike pinched aluminum and steel consumption and an even wider strike by the UAW would only deepen the demand reduction for the metals industry.

In a Facebook event last night, UAW president Shawn Fain said that while progress had been made during the negotiations he rejected proposals from the Big Three automakers — prior to GM's latest offer — and prepared his members to strike.

Fain's plan includes what he has dubbed the "stand-up strike" where only certain production facilities will down tools rather than all at once. Fain believes that the strategy will create confusion for the auto companies and strengthen UAW bargaining committees' negotiating power.

Some union members have called for an across-the-board strike at all represented auto production facilities.

An emailed request for comment from the UAW about GM's latest proposal was not immediately returned.
