Technical teams are evaluating Trinidad and Tobago's Atlantic LNG complex following a fire that shut down the facility yesterday.

The fire at one of the power generation units has been extinguished, the company said, without indicating the cause of the blaze.

Atlantic has not indicated when normal operations will resume at the 14.8mn t/yr liquefaction complex at Point Fortin on Trinidad's southwestern coast.

"The company's response and safety systems immediately activated as per design," Atlantic said. The fire was "quickly extinguished" and the complex is being examined by technicians.

"The company is in the process of advising relevant stakeholders," the firm said.

Atlantic is owned by BP, Shell, China's sovereign wealth fund CIC unit Summer Soca and state-owned NGC.

The liquefaction complex closed a 3.3mn t/yr unit for 11 days in August following a hydrocarbon leak.

The government hopes the fire will have "no significant impact" on LNG production as the incident was "short-lived," a local energy ministry official told Argus today.

Atlantic's production is in a prolonged decline because of a natural gas shortage.
