Norway-based producer Yara and German chemical company BASF have today begun operations at their joint-venture ammonia facility in Freeport, Texas.

The Freeport facility has a production capacity of 750,000 t/yr ammonia. Yara will market 68pc of the total ammonia produced, while BASF's share is the remaining 32pc. The plant has a supporting storage facility, constructed by Yara, and upgraded terminal and pipeline assets built by BASF.

Yara will distribute its share of ammonia to North American customers in the industrial and agricultural sectors, while BASF will produce polyamide 6.

The plant utilizes a hydrogen-based technology that does not require natural gas for ammonia production, lowering input costs. The two companies signed a long-term supply agreement with industrial gas company Praxair for the facility's hydrogen and nitrogen needs.
