UK-based Sirius Minerals has signed a seven-year binding offtake agreement to supply its POLY4 brand of polyhalite to Nigeria through a trading firm.
The take-or-pay offtake agreement has been reached with Dubai-based trading company Intercontinental Trade DMCC. The supply agreement starts from first production, with volumes of POLY4 increasing to 350,000 t/yr in the fourth year. Initial volumes for the first three years were not disclosed.
Sirius has targeted the fourth quarter of 2021 for the start of production at its Woodsmith Mine in North Yorkshire in the UK. But it said earlier this year it hopes to commence production sooner, in May 2021.
Sirius has previously signed firm offtake agreements for 4.4mn t of POLY4 — rising to 5.5mn t, including options — focused on Latin America, China, North America and southeast Asia.
The latest agreement raises the total offtake commitments to 4.7mn t/yr.
Sirius' output is expected to reach 10mn t/yr by 2024, before potentially rising to 20mn t/yr.
