Europe books more Indian iron ore pellet

A UK-based steel plant is due to receive a 66,000t shipment of iron ore pellets from India, amid tight supply in Europe.

Indian shipping data show the MV London 2012 berthing in New Mangalore today to load the cargo sourced from an Indian state-controlled iron ore producer. The cargo is due to arrive at its destination in mid-April, assuming an average speed of 14 knots for the Panamax vessel.

A couple of European steelmakers began trialing Indian iron ore pellets last year as global supply tightened and Atlantic 2018 premiums were fixed at historic highs. This is despite long standing concerns over whether the quality of Indian pellets meet the standards required by European steelmakers. A 65,000t pellet cargo from trading firm Jindal Steel and Power was shipped to Rotterdam from Dharma port last August.

Negotiations for 2019 supply contracts are still ongoing but it is believed that as of late February some Japanese buyers had indicated willingness to switch to a 65pc Fe fines base for pellet contracts from a 62pc Fe base. There is no certainty that European participants will agree to the same, despite tight supply conditions, a market participant said.

Medium-term pellet supply remains uncertain in the wake of multiple production cuts since the fatal tailings dam rupture at Brazilian miner Vale's Feijao mine in January. The incident prompted restrictions on the firm's operations in the Minas Gerais province. Vale was also hit with a court order last week to halt operations at the Timbopeba iron ore mine. It confirmed today that a court injunction to cease operations at several tailing dams will delay the restart of production at its Brucutu mine.
