Former Pemex chief executive Emilio Lozoya secured the suspension of an arrest warrant issued against him in connection with an ongoing corruption investigation.

"The court awarded the definitive suspension so that the arrest warrant is not executed until the matter of his injunction is resolved," the Mexico City criminal court today.

An arrest warrant was issued for Lozoya and the director of steel producer Altos Hornos de Mexico (AHMSA) on 28 May amid an ongoing corruption investigation into Pemex's purchase of a defunct fertilizer plant from AHMSA at what federal auditors said was an inflated price. AHMSA owner Alonso Ancira was arrested in Mallorca, Spain, on 28 May and is being held in custody in Madrid, the attorney general said previously.

The arrest warrant was suspended because the alleged crimes committed by Lozoya do not qualify for preventative custody, the Mexico City criminal court said today.

Lozoya, chief executive of Pemex between 2012 and 2016, was banned in May from holding public office for ten years after Mexico's civil service ministry found he had submitted a false declaration of assets.

Lozoya is also being investigated for allegedly receiving bribes from scandal-hit Brazilian company Odebrecht in return for awarding contracts during his tenure at the oil company.
