Deadline looms for stockholder John Parker and Son

The final deadline for UK stockholder John Parker and Son to call in administrators or find a buyer for the company is this Thursday, according to UK law.

After filing a Notice of Intention to Appoint Administrators, a company has a maximum of 10 working days to either appoint its own administrator with the approval of the creditors, otherwise it is down to the creditors to make the appointment. Parker and Son filed its notice on 19 July.

In some cases a 10-day extension can be requested but this is rarely granted.

The stockholder's most recently opened depot at Shoreham on the UK's south coast has been emptied of stock, according to market participants. A supermarket chain has made an offer on the facility, according to one.

One steelmaker, a creditor, was interested in purchasing the company but declined to go ahead with a deal.

In documents filed with Companies House on 2 July, current managing director of Parker and Son Guy Parker incorporated a new company called ParkerSteel Holdings, indicating that he may try to buy part or all of the business. In the documents, the new company's address is listed as Parker and Son's headquarters in Canterbury.

Should Parker's go into administration, prepackaged or otherwise, it could have wider ramifications for the whole of the UK marketplace. Given the well-publicised issues at other companies, namely British Steel and Meridian Metal Trading, credit insurance appetite in the UK is already weak. The tough market environment does little to help this situation, with service centres struggling to make margins, although some say volume is still sufficient.
