Alita falls into administration on low lithium prices

Perth-based Alita Resources has been forced into administration, making it the latest casualty of falling lithium prices.

The company, previously known as Alliance Mineral Assets, operates the Bald Hill lithium-tantalum mine in Western Australia. It produced 77,008 wet metric tonnes of lithium concentrate grading 6.15pc lithium oxide in the first half of 2019, and shipped 62,994 dry metric tons of lithium concentrate to offtake partners in the period. It also produced 70,350 lb of tantalum pentoxide in the first half of this year.

The company was served a default notice earlier this month from its financiers and has now voluntarily appointed administrators after declaring it is "insolvent, or likely to become insolvent at some future time".

The Bald Hill mine has been severely hit by the plunge in lithium concentrate prices to $550-600/t from around $1,000/t in early 2018. Alita was originally targeting 180,000t of lithium concentrate output in 2019, ramping up to 240,000t in 2020.

Fellow Perth-based lithium producer Galaxy Resources earlier this year became Alita's largest shareholder and this week acquired the company's $28mn debt. "Galaxy can work directly with all stakeholders to examine the best possible reorganization options," it said before the administration announcement.

Other Australian hard rock lithium producers have had to cut back on production and offtake shipments as a result of low prices, while some have had to shelve expansion plans or stake sales in their projects.

The mining contractor at Bald Hill started scaling back operations on 16 August pending the outcome of negotiations between Alita and its lenders.
