Europe Cu: Premium flat as 2020 contract talks start

Spot premiums for grade A copper cathode in Europe were flat over the past week amid low trading activity, as some consumers started initial negotiation for supply contracts next year.

Consumers have received an initial premium offer of $98/t on an fca basis from Chilean producer Codelco for copper cathode delivery in 2020. The annual premium offered for 2020 is unchanged from the level agreed for 2019.

Despite lower than expected copper demand in Europe this year and a bearish outlook for 2020, Codelco did not cut the annual premium. The rationale for the initial offer was that global demand could pick up if the US-China trade war is resolved.

A consumer said that the initial offer was not reflective of the economic climate and demand outlook in Europe.

"The benchmark premium is far away from the reality. The whole year, the premium in Europe has been at $35-50/t," he said.

Negotiation is expected to continue until the end of this year. European copper producers Aurubis and KGHM have not yet made any offer to consumers.

The Argus weekly copper premium in-warehouse Rotterdam premium was assessed at $20-45/t today, unchanged from the previous week.

The copper premium for delivered southern Europe material also held flat at $45-55/t this week.

The three-month copper contract traded on the London Metal Exchange fell to $5,790/t today, down from $5,797/t on 17 September.
