Cologne municipal utility RheinEnergie plans to add renewable capacity to reach 300MW by 2025, focusing on solar generation.
It will invest €100mn in wind and photovoltaic projects by 2025. The company's focus is on photovoltaic due to the lower cost of construction, it said.
The company also aims to restructure its 685MW combined heat and power (CHP) plant in Merkenich. The plant produces energy from both gas and coal. In the future, the coal-fired unit will be replaced by a small gas-fired plant. RheinEnergie is also reviewing if there is the possibility of sludge incineration with phosphorus recovery.
On the smaller scale, RheinEnergie will invest further in mixed-use district developments that include CHP plants, heat pumps, battery storage systems and photovoltaic plants.
RheinEnergie has launched a programme "Energy & Climate 2030" aimed at halving CO2 emissions by 2030 in Cologne. Building on the initial programme from 2007, it includes a six-point plan to halve CO2 emissions.
