Asian octane boosters fall following crude plunge

Asian prices of octane boosters have fallen to new lows following losses in crude futures on Monday.

Methyl tert-butyl ether (MTBE) was the hardest hit, with prices reaching a near 16-year low. The Argus fob Singapore MTBE price was assessed at $401/t on Monday, down by $115/t or 29pc from the previous assessment on 6 March. The price is the lowest since July 2004. Domestic prices of MTBE in east and south China also fell by Yn200/t to Yn4,400-4,500/t.

Demand for MTBE has been subdued over the past three weeks because of low blending margins and excess supply in the Asia-Pacific region. The 95-92R gasoline blending margin was at $1.80/bl on Monday, below the typical breakeven of $2.60/bl. MTBE is added to gasoline to lift the octane content and allow for a more complete burn at the tailpipe.

Inventories in Singapore — the regional gasoline blending hub — remain high, with around 20,000-30,000t of MTBE from China set to reach the city-state this month. China exported more MTBE last month to relieve storage pressure following the coronavirus outbreak in the country, which started in Wuhan city in late January.

Prices of toluene, which is typically used for gasoline blending, fell below $480/t — the lowest level since December 2008.

Argus assessed toluene prices at $444/t fob South Korea on 9 March, down by $97/t from the 6 March assessment. Domestic toluene prices in east China tracked these losses and fell by Yn465/t to Yn4,320-4,330/t.

Toluene demand from the gasoline sector has been weak since January because of low blending margins and ample supply of MTBE. This trend continued through February, with gasoline use falling significantly in China as people worked from home and reduced travel to limit the spread of the coronavirus.

Toluene import demand declined further last month because of a slowdown in China's automotive sector, as the outbreak hit manufacturing activity and supply chains and weakened the economy. This has in turn led to limited toluene diisocyanate demand for the production of polyurethane, which is used to make automotive parts.
