Sonatrach keeps official crude price steady in August

Algeria's state-owned Sonatrach has kept its official formula price for next month's Saharan Blend crude exports unchanged from this month.

The company has set the retroactive price for August-loading cargoes at a premium of 85¢/bl against Dated Brent, the same as July.

Most of Sonatrach's August sales will be settled against the official formula price, as the firm's crude output is being capped by the Opec+ production restraint agreement, forcing it to prioritise supplies for term buyers and minimise spot transactions. Algeria will have slightly more crude available next month though, with the country's Opec+ quota rising to 864,000 b/d in August-December from 816,000 b/d in May-July.

Argus price assessments for Saharan Blend — which factor in spot trades by foreign companies that are repaid in equity crude for their investments in Algeria's oil sector — have come under pressure this week amid increased availability of more competitively priced light sweet crude from Nigeria and the US. Trade for August-loading Saharan Blend was also briefly impacted by the temporary revival of crude exports from Libya, where port blockades and force majeure restrictions were lifted on 10 July but reinstated within three days.
