EU calls on Turkey to end Cyprus exploration activity

EU foreign affairs high representative Josep Borrell has called on Turkey to end exploration activities in disputed waters off Cyprus "immediately" and engage fully in broad dialogue with the EU. Turkey's actions are fuelling tensions and insecurity in the eastern Mediterranean, he said.

Turkey announced at the weekend that it plans to resume drilling operations in the area between 18 August and 15 September. Previous activity by Turkey's Yavuz drillship earlier this year prompted the EU to impose sanctions on two senior officials at Turkish state-owned oil company TPAO for "unauthorised drilling".

"This action runs counter and undermines efforts to resume dialogue and negotiations, and to pursue immediate de-escalation, which is the only path towards stability and lasting solutions, as reiterated by EU foreign ministers last Friday," Borrell said yesterday.

On 14 August, EU foreign ministers called for immediate de-escalation by Turkey and expressed full solidarity with Greece and Cyprus over Turkey's drilling activities. The ministers hinted that the serious deterioration in Turkey's relationship with the EU could have far-reaching strategic consequences, but they stopped short of backing sanctions against Turkey.
