New LNG carrier Gaslog Galveston departs Korea shipyard

The newbuild 174,000m³ Gaslog Galveston LNG carrier has left South Korean shipbuilder Samsung Heavy Industries' Geoje shipyard, suggesting that it has been delivered to New York-listed owner Gaslog.

The new carrier is declaring for arrival at Singapore on 14 January — where it will likely undergo a cool-down operation and receive heel gas — having left Geoje today. The vessel began sea trials in early November, followed by gas trials a month later.

Gaslog has let the carrier under a term charter agreement to US operator Cheniere, which also started charters on at least four newbuild LNG carriers in 2020. Cheniere is this year set to receive under term charter at least a further five newbuild carriers — two from Gaslog and three from Denmark's Celsius Shipping.

The delivery of the Gaslog Galveston marks another in a run of quick LNG carrier deliveries over the first week of 2021. Five other carriers have been delivered, as well as one floating storage and regasification unit.

A further 14 carriers are scheduled for delivery in the first quarter, in addition to the six already delivered — much higher than the four carriers delivered in the first quarter of 2020. And deliveries are set to remain quick through the rest of 2021, with 34 more scheduled to enter the global LNG fleet.
