Australian mining company Iron Road has included a 1mn-2mn t/yr iron ore pellet plant as part of its proposed 12mn t/yr Central Eyre magnetite project in South Australia.

The combination production capacity will remain at 12mn t/yr, with the volume of magnetite to be determined by the final design capacity of the pellet plant.

The iron ore pellet plant is proposed to be built at Cape Hardy port on the Eyre peninsula in South Australia and is to be 100pc supplied by renewable energy. It will form part of a larger renewable energy hub planned for Cape Hardy, said Iron Road.

Iron Road has a heads of agreement with Australian hydrogen development firm The Hydrogen Utility (H2U), which plans to build ammonia and hydrogen export plants entirely using renewable energy.

Iron Road has been trying to develop the Central Eyre magnetite project since 2014. It scaled the project back in 2019 to 12mn t/yr from 24mn t/yr. Iron Road still plans to produce a 66.7pc Fe magnetite concentrate.
