US hot-rolled coil (HRC) spot prices continued to move up as mills pushed prices toward $1,900/short ton (st).

The Argus weekly domestic US HRC Midwest assessment rose by $30/st to $1,880/st ex-works. Lead times rose to 6-9 weeks from 5-8 weeks.

The Argus weekly domestic US HRC south assessment increased by $30/st to $1,880/st.

More mills offered spot pricing as high as $1,900/st, but no trades were confirmed.

Service centers remained nervous about how high prices have risen and whether the rally can sustain itself. None want to be caught with high priced inventory in the event that prices fall.

Since the beginning of the year, US HRC prices have increased by 88pc and are more than four times higher than the low of $450/st recorded in August 2020.

The same sources reported that customers remain busy and demand continues to outstrip supply. Low inventories also mean that few if any service centers have wiggle room to supply customers with needed material they do not already have on hand.

While North American automakers have continued to report production issues related to semiconductor shortages, it appears that steel tons redirected from automakers have not offset supply issues.

The spread between #1 busheling scrap delivered US Midwest mills and HRC selling prices rose by 2.4pc to $1,306/st from $1,276/st the week before to a new record high spread.

The spread is more than six times higher than a year ago, when it was $205/st.

The Argus weekly domestic US cold-rolled coil (CRC) and hot-dipped galvanized (HDG) assessments both rose by $20/st to $2,080/st.

Lead times for CRC were flat at 9-12 weeks, while HDG lead times increased to 10-13 weeks from 9-12 weeks.

The CME HRC Midwest futures market mostly fell in the last week, and remain heavily in backwardation. September futures pricing jumped by $90/st to $1,868/st, while October pricing rose by $57/st to $1,765/st. November pricing rose by $54/st to $1,706/st, while December futures jumped by $65/st to $1,670/st. January futures pricing increased by $58/st to $1,590/st.

HRC import prices into Houston were flat at $1,600/st ddp.

Plate

The Argus weekly domestic US plate assessment rose by $10/st to $1,650/st delivered. Lead times slipped to 6-8 weeks from 6-9 weeks.
