Japanese auto producer Daihatsu Motor will extend shutdowns of its manufacturing plants in the western and southern prefectures of Osaka and Oita until mid-September, amid a parts shortage caused by the Covid-19 pandemic.

Daihatsu Motor, a wholly-owned subsidiary of domestic car maker Toyota, is extending the closures of its Osaka plant until 17 September and its Oita No.2 plant until 14 September. The company stopped production at Osaka on 30 August and at Oita on 1 September, and had originally planned to resume operations on 10 September.

Daihatsu, like fellow Japanese automakers Toyota and Mazda, has faced a shortage of auto components from southeast Asia because of the resurgence of the Covid-19 pandemic. The company has also halted operations at another plant in western Japan's Shiga prefecture since late August, and stopped operations at its plant in the western prefecture of Kyoto on 3, 10 and 17 September.

Domestic passenger car production by Japan's eight automakers rose by 2pc from a year earlier to 681,572 units in July, because of recovering demand for new cars. But this was still down by 1pc from June. Production is likely to fall because of output cuts in August and September.

Lower car output may put pressure on crude steel production. Japan's crude steel output in July edged lower from a month earlier, as uncertainty loomed over Japan's domestic car production and economic activity.
