Belarusian fertilizer producer Grodno Azot said the construction of a new 30,000 t/yr diesel exhaust fluid (DEF) plant at its urea complex in Grodno, Belarus, is nearing completion.

It is expected to be commissioned in early 2022 but construction could be completed as soon as December, according to an internal source. Everything is in place for a technical audit by the German automotive body VDA — which owns and licences the AdBlue trademark — once the plant is completed, the company said.

The plant will be housed in the Urea-4 workshop, with its feedstock coming from Grodno's 360,000 t/yr urea unit. DEF production will be in addition to the plant's prilled automotive-grade urea production, which is used to produce DEF. Grodno Azot made 2,400t of automotive-grade urea in 2020, Argus estimates.

The company said the main aim of the project is to supply the domestic market, to be a substitute to the DEF and automotive-grade urea imported into Belarus at present, with the option to export volumes in the future.
