Malaysia Airlines partners with Petronas, Neste on SAF

National carrier Malaysia Airlines operated its first flight from Amsterdam to Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, using a 38pc blend of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) and conventional jet.

The biojet was produced from used cooking oil (UCO) and was supplied by Petco, Malaysian state-owned Petronas. marketing and trading arm in Europe, and produced by Finland's Neste.

Earlier this month, Malaysia Aviation Group (MAG), Malaysia Airlines parent company, signed an initial agreement with Petronas Research and Petronas Dagangan to explore collaborative opportunities in the sustainability space. These include the development and adoption of SAF, application of technologies for carbon reduction, carbon offset and waste management, as well as research and development of low-carbon applications.

The firms said they hope to make SAF a viable energy option for regular flights by 2025.
