Indian state-controlled upstream firm Oil India (OIL) will set up a 100kW green hydrogen manufacturing plant at Jorhat, Assam, as the country looks to use green hydrogen as an alternative fuel and accelerate efforts to reduce carbon intensity.

This would be the first physical plant for green hydrogen production by any state-run oil firm, using electrolysers based on AEM technology, the company said in a tweet. The plant will be set up in the firm's pumping station No.3 in Jorhat, in the northeastern Indian state of Assam, though details of the construction timeline were not provided.

India is the world's third-largest energy consumer and is looking to reduce its carbon intensity by 45pc and projected carbon emissions by 1bn t by 2030, while targeting to achieve net-zero emissions by 2070. The country has been taking some robust steps, with state-owned and private-sector firms announcing big investments in green hydrogen production.

State-refiner BPCL has collaborated with a state-run research and development institution to scale up alkaline electrolyser technology for green hydrogen production, while IOC is building its first commercial green hydrogen plant at its 160,000 b/d Mathura refinery in northern India.

Electrolysers are currently imported in the country and state-run refineries are not producing green hydrogen at present.
