Global recycling group European Metal Recycling (EMR) has pushed back the launch of its new deep-sea ferrous scrap export dock in Glasgow, Scotland, to April, the company said on 9 February.

EMR plans to launch the first phase of the new deep-water dock development at the King George V West Quay in April and berth up to eight deep-sea vessels in the first year of operations.

The company announced its investment in the site in June last year and originally planned to begin loading cargoes at the dock in December. The new dock is capable of loading Supramax carriers of up to 60,000dwt.

The first phase of the development will be a site of nearly eight acres that houses an end-of-life vehicle (ELV) processing facility, supported by a new vehicle collection network.

The second phase is currently in the planning stage, with designs being drawn up to increase the size of the site by 50pc and add advanced ELV recycling, processing and metal/waste separation capability. EMR also said the operation will aim to shred large volumes of post-consumer scrap, along with the ELV processing.

If EMR hits its target of eight deep-sea shipments from Glasgow in its first year, and the shipments are on Supramax carriers, this could add more than 400,000 t/yr to UK ferrous scrap exports, representing an 8pc increase on the estimated 4.9mn t of deep-sea ferrous scrap shipments from the UK tracked by Argus in 2021.
