A competitive general election for a seat on the Texas Railroad Commission is likely as incumbent Wayne Christian has been forced into a runoff for the Republican party nomination.
Incumbent Wayne Christian last night secured 41.7pc of votes, falling short of the 50pc needed to win the Republican primary election outright. Christian also received roughly 134,000 fewer votes than the Democratic candidate Luke Warford.
Texas has about 16.9mn registered voters, according to the Texas Secretary of State. Last night Christian received over 765,000 votes, while Warford received over 899,000 votes.
Christian will now face oil and gas attorney Sarah Stogner in a runoff election for the Republican candidacy in May. Stogner received over 245,000 votes.
In recent years incumbents for the Railroad Commission of Texas have faced more competition for reelection.
In March 2020, former Railroad Commissioner Ryan Sitton (R) lost his seat to Jim Wright, who received 55.3pc of votes in a Republican primary election.
The Railroad Commission is the agency that regulates drilling, pipeline permitting, flaring and other industry operations in the state. The commission is governed by three board members elected statewide who serve staggered, six-year terms. Only one seat is up for election in 2022.
The agency has recently faced criticism for its role in the state's power loss during the severe winter weather storm of February 2021 and the amount of natural gas flaring and methane leakage coming from the Permian basin located in parts of west Texas.
