Repsol and Geregas to promote Spanish UCO collection

Spanish integrated Repsol has signed an agreement with edible oil association Geregras to promote the collection of used cooking oil (UCO) in the country.

The companies said the agreement will promote the collection of biofuels waste feedstock UCO in Spain and jointly promote standardisation and development of the sector to raise collection rates to European levels.

Geregas is Spain's national association for collection of used oil and fat wastes. The agreement includes the encouraging of collection UCO from hotels, restaurants and homes.

Repsol is transforming its industrial complexes to be able to manufacture biofuels and low-carbon products with low-, zero- or even negative-carbon footprints with feedstocks such as UCO. The firm in 2019 started manufacturing biofuels using UCO at its 240,000 b/d Petronor refinery in Bilbao and at its 135,000 b/d Puertollano refinery. In October last year Repsol co-processed its first batch of UCO to produce hydrotreated vegetable oil (HVO) at its 120,000 b/d Coruna refinery.

UCO prices in Europe are at all-time highs as the region struggles with tight supply and firm demand from waste-based Ucome biodiesel producers and from producers of HVO. Lower collection rates from the Middle East, a regular exporter to Europe, and lower imports from China caused by lockdown restrictions have supported prices in recent weeks and months.
