Danish fund manager Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners (CIP) plans to build a 2mn t/yr ammonia plant near the port of Geraldton in Western Australia (WA), which will be powered by 5,200MW of wind and solar energy and batteries that will also fuel a 3,000MW electrolyser to produce the ammonia.

The Murchison hydrogen renewables project was originally proposed by Hydrogen Renewables Australia in 2019 before CIP joined the venture in 2020. The majority of the electricity will be sourced from onshore wind farms with plans to build up to 3,700MW of wind generation capacity and a further 1,500MW of solar capacity, according to documents filed by CIP to the WA Environmental Protection Agency.

WA is home to some of Australia's largest hydrogen/ammonia export projects, including the Asian Renewable Energy Hub that plans to install 26,000MW of solar and wind capacity for electrolysers to produce around 10mn t/yr of green ammonia. The Western Green Energy Hub project plans to build 50,000MW of wind and solar generation capacity to power electrolysers to produce around 20mn t/yr of green ammonia.
