Japan's Daikin Industries, a supplier of fluorine for lithium-ion (Li-ion) batteries, has invested in US battery start-up TeraWatt Technology, seeking to tap on growing battery demand to boost its fluorine business.

Daikin did not disclose the investment amount. The company is working with TeraWatt Technology to improve its fluorine technologies and understanding of Li-ion batteries.

Daikin established Technology Innovation Centre in 2019, an organisation that promotes collaborations with start-ups. It has available total funding of ¥11bn ($81mn) for five years to 2024 and has so far invested over ¥4bn in more than 15 start-ups for technological developments.

Japanese companies have ramped up efforts to develop next-generation Li-ion batteries. Domestic refiner Idemitsu and Belgium-based Umicore have agreed to begin a joint study to develop high-performance material for all-solid-state lithium-ion battery (ASSB) for electric vehicles.
