Battery recycler Redwood Materials has partnered with automaker Volkswagen to recycle end-of-life electric vehicle (EV) batteries in the US.

Redwood plans to recover, transport and recycle the EV battery packs from over 1,000 dealer locations in Volkswagen's and Audi's US network, offering the remanufactured cathode and anode components back to EV makers domestically.

The packs will be sent to Redwood's Nevada facilities to recover 95pc of metals like nickel, cobalt, lithium and copper for use in new EV battery packs.

Redwood announced a similar partnership with Toyota at the end of June, initially aiming to tackle recycling batteries housed in Toyota's more plentiful hybrid models.

The battery recycler currently processes 6 GWh/yr of end-of-life batteries into battery materials at its Nevada facility, equivalent to 60,000 EVs, the company said.

Batteries can account for as much as 30pc of the cost of an EV, Redwood said, incentivizing the usage of recycled materials that offer lower-costs and domestic supply-chains.

Volkswagen is targeting 55pc of its US sales to be EVs by 2030, putting it in line with similar estimates make by US automakers Ford and GM.
