The UK's head of state, Queen Elizabeth II, has died, Buckingham Palace announced Thursday.
The monarch, who was 96, died on Thursday at her Balmoral estate in Scotland after her doctors raised concerns about her health earlier in the day and recommended she remain under medical supervision.
She will be succeeded immediately as head of state by her eldest son, Prince Charles, who is expected to take the title King Charles III.
"The Queen died peacefully at Balmoral this afternoon. The King and The Queen Consort will remain at Balmoral this evening and will return to London tomorrow", the palace said.
Details and dates for both the queen's funeral and a subsequent formal coronation ceremony for the new king will be announced in due course.
