Repsol-Sinopec facing possible N Sea strike disruption

Around 140 UK North Sea workers employed by oil service firm Petrofac are being balloted for strike action in a dispute over pay, the Unite trade union said today.

If the industrial action goes ahead, it will have a "major impact on the maintenance and running" of Sino-Spanish joint venture Repsol-Sinopec's North Sea operations, including the Flotta oil terminal in Scotland, according to the union.

Oil and gas fields covered by the ballot include Arbroath, Auk, Claymore, Clyde, Fulmar, Montrose, Piper, Saltire and Tartan. The Bleo Holm floating production storage and offloading vessel, which processes output from the Ross and Blake fields, would also be affected. Repsol-Sinopec's UK North Sea production was over 50,000 b/d equivalent (boe/d) in 2020, the most recent figures to be published.

Unite said the dispute centres on a 10pc pay cut imposed on Petrofac workers during the onset of the Covid-19 pandemic in 2020.

"Unite's highly skilled members working for Petrofac deserve a fair pay rise and the reinstatement of cuts made to their salary in 2020," Unite general-secretary Sharon Graham said. "Our members are helping to generate the eye-watering profits being made by the operator Repsol which are then being siphoned off to pay directors and shareholders across the globe but not the workforce itself."

The same issue prompted around 100 of Petrofac's North Sea workers to vote for industrial action last year, although that strike was eventually averted after Unite negotiated for the wage reduction to be reversed.

It is not just the North Sea facing strike disruption. A substantial chunk of French refining capacity is offline because of wage-related industrial action. Labour disputes are looming over much of Europe's energy sector as disgruntled workers face a sharp rise in the cost of living while their employers make record profits. Unite accused BP of "unfettered profiteering" on the back of its second-quarter financial results.
