The US economy grew at an annual rate of 2.6pc in the third quarter, led by gains in exports, following two quarters of contraction.

The growth in gross domestic product reported today in the advance estimate from the Bureau of Economic Analysis followed contractions of 0.6pc in the second and 1.6pc in the first quarter.

Exports, some of them of petroleum, rose 14.4pc after a 13.8pc gain in the prior quarter. Consumer spending rose at a 1.4pc rate, down from 2pc in the prior quarter. Government spending rose by 2.4pc, with defense spending up by 4.7pc, after falling in the prior quarter. Investment on equipment rose by 10.8pc after falling.

The economy stumbled in the first half of the year on the back of surging inflation, led by higher energy and food costs spiked by the Russian invasion of Ukraine, while supply chains were still buckling from two years of Covid-19-related restrictions and rapid reopenings. But a robust labor market, with unemployment at a five-decade low of 3.5pc and wage growth, has kept consumers spending.

The steepest course of Federal Reserve rate hikes since the 1980s has helped slow demand, especially for housing and other big-ticket items, and most economists have warned that a recession is likely.

The personal consumption expenditures (PCE) index of inflation that the Fed closely follows increased by 4.2pc for the quarter, slowing from 7.3pc in the second quarter. The core PCE index, which strips out volatile food and energy, increased by 4.5pc from 4.7pc.
