Mexico reverses pause in transport permits

Mexico's transportation ministry (SICT) will continue issuing essential permits, license plates and drivers' licenses after complaints that suspending the processes until 2023 because of a cyberattack could hobble commerce.

The ministry this week said it would stop issuing permits, license plates and drivers' licenses until 31 December because of a cyberattack on 24 October, creating possible delays for transporters of refined products and other commodities.

But an emergency meeting with transportation chambers held yesterday made the ministry realize the ripple consequences of its decision, one of the attendees told Argus.

"The essential processes will continue, they will not stop," Mexico's industrial chamber (Concamin) said.

The ministry explained that they published the decree to protect data related to ongoing license processes, but they will accept new permit requests.

The ministry also argued its information and technology department had asked for the temporary suspension to stop the propagation of the cyberattack.

If the ministry stuck with its decision to halt new processes and licenses, the regional supply of refined products in Mexico could have been affected, according to Mexico's freight chamber (Canacar).

Yet the full damage of the cyberattack has not been assessed and several computers inside the ministry still contain malware, Concamin said.

A follow-up meeting between Mexico's industrial and transport associations is scheduled for 9 November.
