Liberty Galati takes BF down for maintenance

UK-owned steelmaker Liberty will suspend production at the last operating blast furnace at its Galati plant in Romania this week, to carry out a 18.3mn lei ($3.92mn) maintenance programme.

Furnace five, which last year produced 2.3mn t, will be offline until January.

"The timing of the programme, with steel demand across Europe impacted by macro-economic issues, will allow Galati to make the improvements to its production processes without impacting customer delivery," Liberty said.

The company plans to continue downstream rolling as normal, having accumulated slab stocks ahead of the maintenance, so deliveries to customers will not be affected.

Work on the furnace will include replacing the wear plates and two BLT gears, cleaning the BF shaft and top platforms, and unblocking the BF scrubber and skip pit.

High energy prices in Europe amid weaker steel demand have in the second half of this year pushed most EU steel producers into loss-making territory. In August, Liberty Primary Steel and Mining chief executive Sandip Biswas told employees in an internal note seen by Argus that it was looking for "short-term government support" to alleviate the working capital squeeze caused by high energy costs.

Liberty Galati produces plate, coil, galvanised sheet and coils and organic coated products, as well as welded tubular products.
