NLMK La Louviere declares force majeure on coils

NLMK La Louviere has declared force majeure after a "major breakage" to a pinion shaft in one of the finishing stands at its hot strip mill.

The incident happened on 9 December and chief commercial officer Burak Soydan sent a note to customers on 20 December.

"Our current findings lead us to believe that a possible restart of the production activities — albeit in a partial mode and for coils of certain thicknesses only — could occur in the beginning of January 2023, without excluding the possibility of additional delays, depending on the status of the damage," Soydan said in the customer note seen by Argus.

The company will struggle to produce thinner coils, making it "extremely challenging" for it to honour its contractual obligations, the note stated. The company has been taking steady orders in recent weeks as hot-rolled coil (HRC) prices rise. Argus' daily benchmark northwest Europe HRC index had risen to €673.50/t yesterday from €602.25/t at the end of November.

Separately, a fire broke out yesterday in La Louviere's cold rolling mill area.

Because of the force majeure, NLMK has been asking other producers to provide hire rolling, but it is unclear whether they will agree, as some do not want to transact with Russia-linked entities.
