Australian lithium mining firm Sayona Mining Limited (SYA) has produced its first batch of saleable lithium concentrate from its subsidiary mine North American Lithium (NAL) in Quebec, Canada.

NAL produced 1,200t of commercial-grade spodumene, including some at SC6 (6pc lithium), becoming the most recent mining firm to begin production of lithium products in North America. The company expects its first four commercial shipments to start by July. The company is targeting production of between 85,000-115,000t during the first half of the fiscal year 2024.

Sayona has a partnership with fellow Australian lithium mining firm Piedmont Lithium on NAL, of which Piedmont owns 25pc and SYA 75pc to process lithium products further downstream from the spodumene mine. Piedmont has agreed to take the greater 50pc of production at the mine, or 113,000t of spodumene.

"As the electrification revolution continues, Quebec is in pole position thanks to its sustainable hydropower, leading infrastructure and proximity to market," SYA managing director Brett Lynch said.

Quebec is emerging as a key hub for both battery metal and cell production, especially following the US Inflation Reduction Act, which has boosted Canada's status as a battery material producer because of its proximity and trading relationship with the US.

Key developments in early 2023

The company also announced its half-year results today, pointing to some key developments which have taken place in the previous six months.

The company launched a pre-feasibility study (PFS) for a lithium carbonate plant at NAL in October. It is targeting 2027 for the plant in initial plans, but this will depend on the results of the PFS. Lithium carbonate is used in battery cell production and until recently, there have been limited refineries operating outside China and South America. It is also continuing exploration in conjunction with Jourdan Resources Ltd at the Vallée Lithium Project, also in Quebec, which has so far found spodumene at grades ranging from 0.88-1.63pc. In November, SYA also acquired rights to another concession in Moblan, northern Quebec, for C$44.6mn. A PFS on a mine in the area is expected to be completed by May, followed by a definitive feasibility study by September. Depending on the results, SYA targets 2027 for spodumene production in the area.
