The Asian Development Bank (ADB) on 29 June approved a $1bn loan to support the Philippines' Davao city in its electric bus purchases and overhaul its public transport system.

The loan will support Davao, the Philippines' third most-populated city, to secure an electric bus fleet consisting of around 1,100 electric and the EU's Euro-5 standard diesel buses.

It will be the country's first project to deploy electric bus fleet at scale and ADB's largest road-based transport project in the country. The project is expected to service around 800,000 passengers daily and cut the city's public transport sector greenhouse gas emissions by about 60pc.

"The project is set to transform the quality of Davao city's public transport and support the city's rapid economic growth with a low-carbon and climate-resilient bus system," said ADB's senior transport specialist for southeast Asia Shuji Kimura.

The Philippines released a national electric vehicle roadmap in April, setting out an ambitious target of having a 10pc electric bus share by 2030 and 15pc by 2040 under the clean energy scenario.
