South Korean battery manufacturer LG Energy Solutions (LGES) has signed an agreement with Chilean lithium producer SQM to buy 100,000t of battery-grade lithium carbonate and hydroxide over 2023-29.

The amount will be sufficient to manufacture batteries for more than 2mn units of high-performance electric vehicles (EV), LGES said on 7 July. The agreement will supersede an earlier agreement signed between the two firms in 2020, and is part of LGES' efforts to diversify its supply chain for a more stable lithium supply and a response to US' Inflation Reduction Act.

LGES in May signed an offtake term sheet with Australian lithium firm Green Technology Metals (GTM) with a similar aim. GTM will sell 25pc of the spodumene concentrate production from its Seymour site in Canada's Ontario to LGES for five years once the site begins commercial production, according to the agreement. The lithium supply will be delivered in the form of lithium hydroxide if a lithium hydroxide conversion facility is developed within the contract's timeframe.

LGES in April signed a multi-year contract with South Korean battery material producer Posco Future M to secure almost 30 trillion won ($22.4bn) worth of high-nickel cathode materials, which are key to manufacturing EV batteries.
