Japanese utility Shikoku Electric Power has acquired a 12.75pc stake in the 1.73GW Riyadh PP11 independent power project in Saudi Arabia.

Shikoku said on 9 August that it bought the stake, its first project in Saudi Arabia, from Japanese trading house Sojitz. The Riyadh PP11 combined-cycle gas turbine power plant is located 125km to the west of the Saudi capital Riyadh. State-owned Saudi Electricity (SEC) and French utility Engie own 50pc and 20pc each, while Saudi conglomerate Al Jomaih has 15pc and Sojitz now 2.25pc after Shikoku's acquisition.

Electricity produced from Riyadh PP11 is sold to SEC under a 21-year contract that started in 2013 and ends in April 2034.
