Swedish low-carbon steelmaker H2 Green Steel has signed two multi-year supply agreements with mining firms Rio Tinto and Vale for the supply of direct reduction iron ore (DRI) pellets for the production of green steel.

The company's Boden steel mill, located in northern Sweden, will receive an undisclosed amount of DRI pellets from both mining firms.

H2 Green Steel said that the deal with Rio Tinto will "account for a significant part of the iron ore supply to H2 Green Steel's flagship plant in Boden". The agreement will also see Rio Tinto buy and sell-on surplus hot-briquetted iron (HBI) produced by H2 Green Steel during the ramp up of operations at Boden.

The Boden mill is expected to start production in 2025, with an initial total steel capacity of 2.5mn t/yr.

H2 Green Steel highlighted that the DRI pellets, supplied by Vale, will be shipped from Tubarao in Brazil to Boden via the Port of Lulea in Sweden.

The use of DRI iron ore combined with green hydrogen is expected to achieve a CO2 reduction of up to 95pc when compared with blast furnace-based steelmaking, H2 Green Steel said.
