Thailand's parliament voted Srettha Thavisin of the Pheu Thai party as the country's 30th prime minister on 22 August, ending three months of political deadlock and policy uncertainty.

Upon his appointment, Thavisin said he looks forward to strengthening ties with countries like India and the US.

The Move Forward Party initially won the country's election in May but did not garner enough seats to form the government. Party leader Pita Limjaroenrat was also not appointed prime minister when the first parliamentary vote took place in July.

It is unclear whether the appointment of Thavisin will lead to any changes in the country's energy policy.

Thailand remains firmly focused on ensuring its energy security, with state-controlled PTTEP continuing to invest in exploration and production to ensure domestic supply. "We decided we need to drive [exploration and production]," chief executive Montri Rawanchaikul said in June, adding that exploration efforts are not just for profitability but for the security of the population, as energy security determines quality of life in Asia. Because of this, "every single Btu of gas counts."

But the country has also been working towards reducing its emissions to achieve its 2065 net zero goal. "We believe [carbon capture and storage] is a must," Rawanchaikul said, adding that PTTEP has tried to do this "in-house" at their production fields. PTTEP is developing the country's first CCS project at the Arthit gas field. Thailand also launched its first carbon credit exchange in September 2022. The platform, called FTIX, will initially only trade local Thailand Voluntary Reduction Program (T-VER) credits, but it is hoped this will pave the way for it to become a carbon credit exchange hub in southeast Asia.
