Brazilian iron ore exports surged in August to the highest since Global Trade Tracker (GTT) data began in 2002 — for the second time this year.

Exports rose to 37.5mn t last month from 33.3mn t a year earlier, according to development, industry, trade and services ministry data. This was the second monthly record this year after exports reached 35.2mn t in May.

Rising demand for iron ore in the Middle East and north Africa (Mena) region supported Brazilian exports. Two of 14 Capesize and larger vessels that left Tubarao in August sailed for Libya and Egypt, according to ship tracking service FleetMon.

Average freight rates from Tubarao to Qingdao in China fell in July — when vessels were booked for August-loading iron ore — to $19.65/t, 34pc lower than a year earlier. But the rate trended up over the month to $20/t on 31 July, when iron ore producer Vale fixed a range of vessels to load from the second half of August.

Brazil's overall exports totalled 238.9mn t in January-August, 8.8pc higher on the year, ministry data show.
